Age Grading & Combined Event Scoring

Age Grading is an adjustment for a performance (time, height or distance) based on age – the older you are, the bigger the adjustment. The adjustment, known as an Age Grade Factor, is multiplied by the performance to get an Age Graded Performance so all times, heights or distances for each event by athletes from 20 to over 100 years old can be compared to each other! The Age Graded Performance is the equivalent to what the athlete would have done when they were in their 20s.

Meet the Athletes

Dennis Stewart graduated from the University of Kansas in 1970 with a B.A. degree in Zoology and while at Kansas University he ran track for three years and made All American in 1970 when a two-mile relay team he was a member of set an indoor world record at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Detroit, Michigan.

After graduation, Dennis continued his studies and in 1978 he received his Master’s degree from the University of Central Missouri in Secondary Science Education. He also continued competitive running and in 1973 he was selected as the most outstanding long distance runner in the Missouri Valley AAU. In 1977 Dennis was inducted into the University of Kansas Athletic Hall of Fame.

Running was a big part of Dennis’s life, but as he grew older he developed a passion for mountain climbing and he was the 100th individual to climb the highest point in each of the 50 states. In 1991 he received recognition in The Guinness Book of Records (1993-1995) for setting the World Record with four other climbers for climbing the highest point in each of the lower 48 contiguous states in the shortest time (30 days, 10 hours, 52 mins.) and he is currently the only individual who has ever climbed the highest point in each of the contiguous 48 states three times.
