Year in Review – EMACS 2017

The 20th European Masters Athletics Championships Stadia were held July 27 – August 6 2017 in Aarhus, Denmark. Over 3,300 athletes participated representing 42 countries. Athletes from South Africa, Israel, Canada, USA and New Zealand were welcomed at the championship.

Always a premier competition any year it is held, this year’s event was filled with exceptional performances including 10 World and 17 European IndividualRecords. 2 World (WB) and 3 European (EB), All-Time Throws Pentathlon bests were thrown by Hilja Bakhoff (W90 – SP WB, HT & WT EB), Eila Mikola (W80 SP WB) and Anne Kirstine Jensen (W60 JT EB).

Hilja Bakhoff added 3 World (Weight Throw, Hammer & Throws Pentathlon) to her amazing accomplishments. Angela Copson (W70) ran for two World Records eclipsing 800m (2:51.49 besting previous 2:59.55) and 10000m (44:25.14 besting previous 44:43.27). Klemens Grissmer (M65) scored 8205 in the Decathlon to increase the 2009 record by almost 400 andMihaela Loghin (W65) threw 13.08 to erase the previous SP mark by almost a meter! Elena Pagu (W90) walked 1h32:25 in the 10kRW, Jane Horder (W60) edged her 80mh record set earlier this year by running 12.90 andSusan Frisby (W55) ran 48.74 in the 300mh – all World Records at the time.

Jostein Haraldseid (M80) set a new ER in the 200mh while running against the previous record holder, Kjartan Soelvberg. Other European Records were set byGuenter Ciesielski (M90) – 5000m Race Walk, Jostein Haraldseid (M80) – 200mh, Bernardino Pereira (M80) – 5000m, Manuel Alonso Domingo (M80) – 800m, Knut Henrik Skramstad (M80) – Decathlon, Rietje Dijkman (W75) – Triple Jump, Seija Sario (W75) – Heptathlon, Inkeri Janhunen (W75) – 400m, Terhi Kokkonen (W70) – 200mh, Anne Kirstine Jensen (W60) – Javelin Throw, Marie Astrid Monmessin (W60) – 10K Race Walk, Susan Frisby (W55) – Heptathlon, Ralf Jossa (M50) – Weight Throw and Nicole Weijling-Dissel (W50) – 800m
