Year in Review – WMA Regional Championships (Africa)
The 10th Africa Masters Stade Championships were held 25 – 27 August in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire. Athletes attended from Germany and Barbados in addition to Africa. Nigeria led medalists with 31 gold and 8 silver. The hosts followed with 15 gold, 9 silver and 4 bronze.
The biggest group of competitors was in the 10k road race. The best performances, by age grade, were byKonan Severin N?ori(M40) – 30:02,Ben Hadj Slimame Najet (W60) – 45:10, Adama Sidibe (M45) – 34:57,Aboubacar Diallo (M60) – 39:18 andJean Wamba (M45) – 35:16.
In addition to her 10k win, Ben Hadj Slimame Najet (W60), from Tunisia, also won the 100m, 5000m and 10000m – quite an accomplishment for two days!Jimmy Sehi (M35), from the host country, won the Triple Jump, 400m and 1500m.Safiya Yahaya-Kongoila (W40), from Nigeria, won the 100m, 200m and 400m.
Guests from Germany and Barbados also did well. Alfred Helmes (M70), from Germany, ran his current #4 World Ranked 2:29.70 in winning the800mand won the 1500m.Merle Jordan (W55), from Barbados won the 100m and 400m.Rheineck Hanno (M75), from Germany, won the 400m.
