Janelle Dickerson, USA - W59

Running has been the main focus since I was 10-years old. It taught me dedication, foresight and to think and stay healthy. I love being a masters’ track athlete. The masters’ community/family is far and wide with a large support system. I`ve made so many wonderful friends through running.

Running became serious when I was in high school. I earned All-American in cross-country and track. I competed at state level (Oregon) and Junior Olympics in both sports.

I went onto run one year in college and while serving active duty Air Force and Oregon Army National Guard. I excelled beyond the maximum requirements for both U.S. branches of military service - which earned me recognition.

After a 21-year break from racing, I decided to get back on the track at the age of 46. My career (U.S. Air Force, Oregon Army NG, broadcasting/print career) came first and racing took the back seat. I never quit running. However, competing in my late 20`s to early 40`s was not an option; I wasn’t able to squeeze in the needed time for training due to working 40+ hours a week.

Once I returned to racing, it was an uphill battle. It was a huge wake up call and frustrating not being able to run the same speed and accuracy I did at the age of 24. I kept thinking, "I missed out on the best performances of my life." But, then I stop myself and consider the thought that I might`ve run myself into the ground and not be able to run as a masters runner. I`m glad I took a long break. The two-decade rest has probably saved my legs and body.

I’ve earned All-American in road races (5K, 10K & HM) and outdoor track (400m, 1 Mile, 3,000m). I will continue to achieve AA because I have a strong will (and I`m stubborn to the bone). I wore my country`s uniform as an Airman and Soldier with great pride. My goal is to represent my country wearing USA as a Master Athlete. That will truly be the most proud moment of my life. My strength comes from the tenaciousness and burning desire to never quit. I hope to be running until I take my last breath.

I have a BS degree in Broadcast Communications from Southern Oregon University (1998). I currently work as a freelance photojournalist and still/video photographer. My hobbies include beading, cooking, sewing, sci-fi films, photography and writing. I served active duty Air Force in Medical Logistics at Travis Air Force Base (`87-`90) and Oregon Army National Guard in Public Affairs (`04 -` 07). I`m also an Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran (`05-`06). My husband and I have an 8-year old quarter horse (Jackson), two 4-year old Alaskan Malamutes (Halo & Neeko) and a 7-year old Papillion (Elfy).
