I ran 5K's,10K's, and marathons until 1986. In 1986, I developed lower back problems which were diagnosed as degenerative lower back discs (L4 and L5). I was unable to run competitively after that due to the lower back problems. I took up racewalking in the 1990's. I found that the racewalking put less stress on my lower back and have been racewalking ever since.
